Book Recommendation: The 5 Love Languages, The Secret to Love That Lasts

I recently read a book written by Gary Chapman, titled ‘The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts’. The book is easy to read, without heavy jargon and the author’s writing style is very personable.

The 5 Love Languages he writes about are 1. Words of Affirmation, 2. Quality Time, 3. Receiving Gifts, 4. Acts of Service, 5. Physical Touch.

The author describes each language in detail and includes examples of a variety of ways the love languages can be expressed. He describes the importance of learning a partner’s love language and how to meet their love language needs when that love language does not come naturally to you.

For example, if you are concerned giving gifts is not within your budget, would you consider wrapping an inexpensive or homemade gift your partner would appreciate and surprising them with this gift? If that goes well, would you consider trying this again with another simple item later the same week or perhaps once a week? What kind of effect could this exchange have on your relationship?

The book includes a simple, short quiz to help you identify your primary and secondary love languages. The quiz is also available online and is quite interesting to take, especially when your partner also participates in taking the quiz. This can lead to an interesting conversation and open an opportunity to learn how to show love and receive love in your relationship in meaningful ways.
