Hesitations About Counselling

You are not alone if you are thinking about booking a counselling appointment but hesitating about doing doing this. There are several reasons you might hesitate. You might feel nervous about talking to someone about your personal life and challenges. You might also anticipate feeling the stress that often accompanies attending the first appointment, and when you are navigating your way to the counselling office and meeting someone for the first time. There are things to consider that may help you manage these feelings: counsellors are bound by confidentiality laws which protect your privacy. During the first appointment you will get a chance to build connection and trust with your counsellor. If during the session you are not certain the connection is there, consider attending one more appointment to build a connection, or refer to another counsellor. To help you navigate to your first appointment consider going by the office prior to your first appointment to help you locate it and / or search online for directions to the location.

You may also be experiencing doubt whether counselling will help you or self-judgement about needing to talk to a counsellor. Consider this: it is natural to wonder if something will work whether it is a new experience or if you attended counselling before but did not find it helpful. You will be able to work with your counsellor to help you progress toward your goals and manage any barriers. Also consider, if you were struggling with something physically, you would book an appointment with a doctor, chiropractor or other health practitioner for help.  If you are struggling with something emotionally, you can book an appointment with a counsellor. Counselling can help!
